DTC 21/31: Courtesy Lights Feed Circuit Short To Ground: Testing

NOTE: Incorrect installation of aftermarket electronic equipment may effect system operation.
  1. If lighting system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If lighting diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform diagnostic system check before proceeding. See LIGHTING SYSTEMS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Disconnect one of the courtesy lamps connectors. Probe a test lamp between a good ground and the courtesy lamps supply voltage. If test lamp does not illuminates, go to next step. If test lamp illuminates, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  3. Inspect courtesy fuse for an open. If the courtesy fuse is open, go to step  8. If courtesy fuse is not open, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect body control module (BCM) connectors. Probe battery positive voltage circuit of BCM that feeds courtesy lamps supply voltage with a good ground. If test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If test lamp does not illuminate, then go to step  9.
  5. Connect fused jumper between battery positive voltage and the courtesy lamps supply voltage of the BCM connector. Probe the courtesy lamps with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. If test lamp illuminates, go to step  7. If test lamp does not illuminate, go to next step.
  6. Repair open or high resistance in the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit, then go to step  11.
  7. Inspect BCM harness connector for poor connections. If poor connection is found, repair as necessary and go to step  11. If poor connection is not found, go to step  10.
  8. Repair short to ground in the battery positive voltage of the BCM that feeds the courtesy lamp, then go to step  11.
  9. Repair open or high resistance in the battery positive voltage of the BCM that feeds the courtesy lamp, then go to step  11.
  10. Replace BCM. Program BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE PROGRAMMING  under PROGRAMMING. After repair is completed, go to next step.
  11. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle under same conditions when DTC was first set. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING BODY CONTROL MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . If DTC resets, repeat test beginning at step  2.
