Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ON the ignition. With a scan tool, observe the Clutch Anticipate Switch parameter. Does the scan tool indicate Released? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  6.
  3. Depress the clutch pedal while observing the Clutch Anticipate Switch parameter on the scan tool. Does the parameter change to Applied? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect the Clutch Anticipate Switch. Does the scan tool indicate Applied? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to next step.
  5. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the PCM. Probe the signal circuit at the PCM harness connector using a test lamp that is connected to battery voltage. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to step  15.
  6. Disconnect the clutch pedal switch. Probe the ground circuit using a test lamp that is connected to battery voltage. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  10.
  7. Connect a fused jumper between the signal circuit and the ground circuit. With a scan tool, observe the clutch anticipate switch parameter. Does the scan tool indicate Released? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  8. Test the signal circuit for an open or a short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  16. If no, go to step  14.
  9. Repair the short to ground in the signal circuit. After repairs, go to step  16.
  10. Repair open in the ground circuit. After repairs, go to step  16.
  11. Test the Clutch Anticipate Switch adjustment. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  16. If no, go to next step.
  12. Inspect for poor connections at the Clutch Anticipate Switch. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  16. If no, go to next step.
  13. Replace the Clutch Anticipate Switch. After repairs, go to step  16.
  14. Inspect for poor connections at PCM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  16. If no, go to next step.
  15. Replace the PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
  16. Turn ON the ignition. With a scan tool, observe the clutch anticipate switch parameter. Does scan tool indicate Released? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  6.
  17. Depress the clutch pedal while observing the Clutch Anticipate Switch display on the scan tool. Does the parameter change to Applied? If yes, system is okay. If no, go to step  4.
