Oil Pan: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the engine support fixture to the engine. See ENGINE SUPPORT FIXTURE .
  2. Disconnect the front brake pipes from the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV). Plug or cap the brake pipes and BPMV to prevent contamination.
  3. Remove the starter motor. See STARTERS - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article in ENGINE.
  4. Remove the oil drain plug in order to allow the oil to drain. Install the engine oil drain plug until snug. Remove the oil filter in order to allow the oil to drain. See Figure.
  5. Remove the right side engine mount bracket bolts. Remove the left side engine mount bracket bolts.
  6. Remove the right and left side end link nuts. See Fig 1. Remove the right and left side end links and sleeves. Remove the right and left side shock absorber lower mounting bolts.
  7. Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt. See Fig 2. Position the steering shaft out of the way. Remove the power steering gear nuts and bolts. Separate the gear from the crossmember and support.
  8. Disconnect the left and right side wheel speed sensor harness connectors. If necessary, disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) harness connectors. See Figure.
  9. Remove the front fuel pipe heat shield nuts. Remove the front fuel pipe heat shield. Remove the front brake pipes from the retaining clip.
  10. Disconnect the oil level sensor harness connector. See Figure. Remove the oil level sensor from the oil pan (if necessary). See Figure. Remove the right side transmission cover and bolt. Remove the left side transmission cover and bolt.
  11. Support the crossmember with a suitable jack. Remove the crossmember bolts. Lower the crossmember. Remove the bottom 2 transmission bellhousing bolts. Remove the oil pan bolts.
    12. NOTE: Use care not to gouge, score or damage the oil pan sealing surface. DO NOT allow foreign material to enter the oil passages of the oil pan, cap or cover the openings as required.
  12. Rotate the oil pan until it can be removed from around the oil pump screen. See Figure. Drill out the oil pan gasket rivets, if necessary. Discard the gasket and rivets.
