Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the engine assembly. See ENGINE . Remove the crankshaft balancer. See CRANKSHAFT BALANCER . Remove the oil level indicator tube. See OIL LEVEL INDICATOR TUBE  under ENGINE OILING.
  2. Remove the left side and right side exhaust manifolds. See EXHAUST MANIFOLD . Remove the water pump. See WATER PUMP . Remove the intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  3. Remove the engine coolant air bleed pipe by removing the studs, then the pipe and gaskets. See Fig 1.
  4. Remove the left side and right side valve rocker arm covers, then remove the valve rocker arms and push rods. See ROCKER ARMS & PUSH RODS .
  5. Remove the left side and right side cylinder heads. See CYLINDER HEADS . Remove the valve lifters. See VALVE LIFTERS .
  6. Remove the oil pan-to-front cover bolts. Remove the front cover bolts. See Fig 2. Remove the front cover and gasket. Discard the old gasket.
  7. Rotate the engine in order to align the timing marks. See Fig 3. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove the timing chain from the camshaft sprocket, and allow the timing chain to rest on the crankshaft sprocket.
  8. Remove the camshaft sensor bolt and the sensor. Remove the camshaft retainer bolts and the retainer.
    9. CAUTION: All camshaft journals are the same diameter, so care must be used in removing or installing the camshaft to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.
  9. Remove the camshaft by installing the 3 M8-1.25 x 100 mm bolts in the camshaft front bolt holes. Using the bolts as a handle, carefully rotate and pull the camshaft out of the engine block. Remove the bolts from the front of the camshaft.
  10. Clean and inspect the camshaft and bearings. See INSPECTION .
    11. NOTE: Rear cover removal is not required if the camshaft bearings are not being replaced.
  11. If the camshaft bearings need to be replaced, remove the oil pan-to-rear cover bolts. Remove the rear cover bolts. Remove the rear cover and gasket. Discard the gasket. Remove the camshaft bearings, if required. See CAMSHAFT BEARING REMOVAL  procedure in CYLINDER BLOCK ASSEMBLY under OVERHAUL.
