Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install NEW camshaft bearings, if required. See CAMSHAFT BEARING INSTALLATION  procedure in CYLINDER BLOCK ASSEMBLY under OVERHAUL. Apply a 0.20" (5 mm) bead of sealant GM (P/N 12378190), 0.8" (20 mm) long, to the oil pan to engine block junction, if required.
  2. Install the rear cover and a NEW gasket, if required. See Figure. Install the rear cover bolts until snug, if required. Install the oil pan-to-rear cover bolts until snug, if required. Rotate the crankshaft as required until 2 opposing flywheel bolt holes are parallel to the oil pan surface, if required.
  3. NOTE: The tapered legs of the alignment tool must enter the rear cover oil seal bore.
  4. Install the Rear Cover Alignment Tool (J-41476) bolts until snug. DO NOT overtighten. See Fig 1.
  5. Tighten the oil pan-to-rear cover bolts to specification. Tighten the engine rear cover bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Remove the rear cover alignment tool.
  6. Install a NEW crankshaft rear oil seal, if required. See CRANKSHAFT REAR OIL SEAL .
  7. NOTE: If camshaft replacement is required, the valve lifters must also be replaced. See VALVE LIFTERS .
  8. Lubricate the camshaft journals and the bearings with clean engine oil. Install M8-1.25 x 4.0" (3 M8-1.25 x 100 mm) bolts into the camshaft front bolt holes.
  9. NOTE: All camshaft journals are the same diameter, so care must be used in removing or installing the camshaft to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.
  10. Using the bolts as a handle, carefully install the camshaft into the engine block. Remove the 3 bolts from the front of the camshaft.
  11. Install the retainer plate with the sealing gasket facing the engine block. The gasket surface on the engine block should be clean and free of dirt or debris. Install the camshaft retainer and the bolts. Tighten the camshaft retainer bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  12. Inspect the camshaft sensor "O" ring seal. If the "O" ring seal is not cut or damaged, it may be reused. Lubricate the "O" ring seal with clean engine oil.
  13. Install the camshaft sensor and bolt. Tighten the camshaft sensor bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  14. Align the camshaft sprocket alignment mark in the 6 o'clock position. See Figure.
  15. Install the camshaft sprocket and timing chain. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  16. Apply a 0.20" (5 mm) bead of sealant (GM P/N 12378190), 0.8" (20 mm) long, to the oil pan to engine block junction.
  17. Install the front cover and a NEW gasket. Install the front cover bolts until snug.
  18. Install the oil pan-to-front cover bolts until snug.
  19. Install the Front Cover Alignment Tool (J-41476) and crankshaft balancer bolt to the front cover. Align the tapered legs of the alignment tool with the machined alignment surfaces on the front cover.
  20. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt until snug. DO NOT overtighten. Tighten the oil pan-to-front cover bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten the engine front cover bolts to specification. Remove the front cover alignment tool.
  21. Install a NEW crankshaft front oil seal. See CRANKSHAFT FRONT OIL SEAL . Install the valve lifters. See VALVE LIFTERS .
  22. Install the right and left side cylinder heads. See CYLINDER HEADS . Install the valve rocker arms and push rods. See ROCKER ARMS & PUSH RODS .
  23. Install NEW gaskets to the coolant air bleed pipe. Install the pipe and gaskets onto the cylinder heads. Install the 2 pipe studs to the front of the engine. Tighten studs to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  24. Install the intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Install the water pump. See WATER PUMP . Install the left side and right side exhaust manifolds. See EXHAUST MANIFOLD . Install the oil level indicator tube. See OIL LEVEL INDICATOR TUBE  under ENGINE OILING. Install the crankshaft balancer. See CRANKSHAFT BALANCER . Install the engine assembly. See ENGINE .
