DTC P0461: Fuel Level Sensor Performance: Testing

  1. If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Remove fuel level sender. See FUEL PUMP under FUEL SYSTEM in appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Inspect for following items:
    • A stuck fuel level sender (i.e. fuel strainer interfering with sender float arm).
    • Foreign material in fuel tank.

    If no problem was found, go to next step. If a problem exist, repair as necessary. Go to step  4 .

  3. Replace fuel level sender. After repair, go to next step.
  4. Use scan tool in order to clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within CODE ENABLE CRITERIA  conditions. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC resets as current, go to step  3 . If DTC does not reset as current, system is okay.
