DTC B2961: Key-In-Ignition Circuit Malfunction: Testing

  1. If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel. Using scan tool, observe KEY-IN-IGNITION parameter in BCM INPUT 1 data list. If scan tool displays ACTIVE, go to next step. If display does not display ACTIVE, go to step  4 .
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Observe IGNITION 1 parameter in BCM INPUT 1 data list. Turn ignition off. If scan tool displays ACTIVE with ignition off, go to step  7 . If scan tool does not display ACTIVE with ignition off, go to step  8 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect BCM harness connector C2. See Fig 1 . Connect a test light between battery positive voltage and BCM harness connector C2 terminal B9 (Light Green wire). Place key-in-ignition, if test light illuminates, go to step  8 . If test light does illuminate, go to next step.
  5. Test Light Green wire between BCM and ignition key cylinder for an open or high resistance. If problem is not found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair source of high resistance or open circuit as necessary, go to step  12 .
  6. NOTE: Tan wire changes to Black wire at splice point S206. Splice point S206 is located in instrument panel wiring harness, which routes over convenience center relay box under instrument panel, to left of steering column. Ground point (Black wire) is located at firewall near brake master cylinder. See Fig 2 and Fig 3 . See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  7. Test ground circuit between ignition key alarm switch connector C201 terminal B4 and ground point G110, for an open circuit or for a high resistance. See Fig 4 . If problem is not found, go to step  9 . If problem is found, repair as necessary, go to step  12 .
  8. Test Pink wire between instrument cluster and instrument panel junction block for short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem is not found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary, go to step  12 .
  9. Inspect for poor connections at harness connector of BCM. If problem is not found, go to step  11 . If problem is found, repair as necessary, go to step  12 .
  10. Inspect for poor connections at harness connector of ignition switch. If problem is not found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary, go to step  12 .
  11. Replace ignition switch. Refer to appropriate procedure. After installation is completed, go to step  12 .
  12. Replace BCM. After installation is completed, Perform set up procedure on BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. Go to next step.
  13. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Reconnect any disconnected components and harness connectors. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within CODE ENABLE CRITERIA  conditions. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC resets as current, go to step  3 . If DTC does not reset as current, system is okay.
