Instrument Cluster System Check

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Air bag warning indicator should flash 7 times. Audio alarm should sound for 4-8 seconds when driver-side seat belt is unbuckled. Brake warning indicator should illuminate for 3-5 seconds. Charge warning indicator should illuminate. Engine coolant temperature gauge should display coolant temperature. Fasten belts indicator should illuminate until driver-side seat belt is buckled. Fuel gauge should increase approximately 1/2 scale above actual level before showing actual level. Low oil level indicator should illuminate for 3-5 seconds or remain illuminated if oil level is low. LOW TRAC indicator should illuminate for 3-5 seconds. Oil pressure warning indicator should illuminate. Security indicator should illuminate for 5 seconds. SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator should illuminate. Speedometer should indicate zero MPH and tachometer should indicate zero RPM. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYSTEM TESTS  .
  2. Set left turn signal to ON position. Left turn signal and indicator should flash. Set left turn signal to OFF position. Left turn signal and indicator should turn off. Set right turn signal to ON position. Right turn signal and indicator should flash. Set right turn signal to OFF position. Right turn signal and indicator should turn off. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, diagnose exterior lights. See appropriate wiring diagram in EXTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  3. Turn headlight switch to ON position. Set headlight dimmer switch to HIGH position. High beam indicator should illuminate. Turn headlight switch to OFF position. High beam indicator should turn off. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYSTEM TESTS  .
  4. Apply parking brake. Parking brake indicator should illuminate. Release parking brake. Parking brake indicator should turn off. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYSTEM TESTS  .
  5. Turn parking lights on. Instrument cluster should illuminate. Adjust instrument panel dimmer switch to OFF position, and then to maximum brightness. Instrument cluster illumination should turn off, and then illuminate to maximum brightness. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYSTEM TESTS  .
  6. Anti-Lock indicator should illuminate. Brake indicator should illuminate.
  7. Turn ignition switch to START position. Start and idle engine. Air bag indicator should remain off until an accident causes deployment or a fault is detected in Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) warning indicator should remain off unless a fault is detected in ABS System. Brake warning indicator should remain off unless a fault is detected in base brakes system, parking brake is engaged or brake fluid level is low. Charge warning indicator should remain off with engine running unless a charging system fault is detected. CHANGE OIL SOON indicator should remain off until PCM determines an oil change is due. Coolant temperature gauge should indicate current coolant temperature. Coolant temperature (HOT) warning indicator should remain off unless coolant temperature exceeds approximately 255°F (124°C). Fuel gauge should read current fuel level. Low coolant (LOW COOLANT) warning indicator should be off unless coolant level drops below sensor level. Low oil level indicator should be off unless oil level drops below a set level. Level is checked after initial power up of PCM. Oil pressure warning indicator should be off unless a fault is detected. Security indicator should be off unless theft deterrent system detects a fault. SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator should be off until PCM determines a fault has occurred.
  8. Fasten seat belts. Fasten belts warning indicator should turn off when seat belt is buckled. Fasten belts warning indicator should stay off until seat belt is unbuckled. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYSTEM TESTS  .
  9. Drive vehicle. LOW TRAC indicator should remain off unless EBCM determines a fault has occurred. Speedometer should indicate current speed and tachometer (if equipped) should indicate current engine RPM. If operation is as specified, system is okay. If operation is not as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYSTEM TESTS  .
