Test 6: Tachometer Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Start engine. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE SPEED parameter in ENGINE DATA 1 data display. If engine speed on scan tool is not equal to engine speed on tachometer, go to next step. If engine speed on scan tool is equal to engine speed on tachometer, perform powertrain on-board diagnostic system check. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Replace instrument cluster, then go to next step.
  4. Connect all disconnect components. Check system for proper operation. If system operates properly, test is complete. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2 .
