Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, repair scan tool or DLC connector concern. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article.
  2. Attempt to establish communications with all modules equipped on vehicle. If scan tool communicates with all modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all modules, repair communications concern. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article.
  3. Using scan tool, retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. If any DTCs exist, go to next step. If no DTCs exist, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. If scan tool displays any DTCs that begin with "U", repair communications concern. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article. If any Body Control Module (BCM) DTCs exist, see BODY CONTROL MODULES - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article. If any Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTCs exist, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If any Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) DTCs exist, repair air bag system as necessary. For information on air bag DIAGNOSIS & TESTING, see lemon-25(R) AIR BAG SERVICE & REPAIR MANUAL, DOMESTIC & IMPORTED MODELS. If any Electronic Bake Control Module (EBCM) DTCs exist, repair anti-lock brake system concern. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES. If DTC B1001 is retrieved from Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), go to DTC B1001: OPTION CONFIGURATION ERROR  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
