Test 1: Instrument Cluster Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. If fault still exists, go to next step. If fault does not still exist, check for poor connections and intermittent conditions.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a test light connected to ground, backprobe at terminal "G" (Orange wire) at instrument cluster harness connector. See Fig 1 . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  8 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Using a test light connected to positive battery voltage, backprobe at terminals "A" (Black wire) and "H" (Black/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector. If test light illuminates at both terminals, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate at both terminals, go to step  7 .
  5. Turn ignition on. Using a test light connected to ground, backprobe at terminal "J" (Pink wire) at instrument cluster harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to step  9 . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  6. Repair open or short to ground in Pink wire between instrument cluster and instrument panel fuse block. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  7. Repair open in Black/White wire between instrument cluster and ground G110 and/or open in Black wire between instrument cluster and ground G204. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  8. Repair open or short to ground in Orange wire between instrument cluster and instrument panel fuse block. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  9. Check for an open or short to ground in Orange wire between Body Control Module (BCM) and instrument panel fuse block. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  11 . If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  10. Replace instrument cluster. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  11. Connect all disconnect components. Check system for proper operation. If system operates properly, test is complete. If system does not operate properly, go to step  3 .
