Test 4: Fuel Gauge Inaccurate/Inoperative
- If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Verify system operation. If fault still exists, go to next step. If fault does not still exist, check for poor connections and intermittent conditions.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER, SPECIAL FUNCTIONS, then IPC GAUGES. Command fuel gauge up and down. When commanded down, fuel gauge should be at or near "E". When commanded up, fuel gauge should be at or near "F". If fuel gauge operates as specified, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not operate as specified, go to step 5 .
- Using scan tool, select DATA DISPLAY then DATA. Compare monitored fuel level to amount of fuel displayed on fuel gauge. If scan tool reading agrees (approximately) with fuel gauge, check for poor connections and intermittent conditions. If scan tool reading does not agree with fuel gauge, perform powertrain on-board diagnostic system check. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
- Connect all disconnected components. Check system for proper operation. If system operates properly, test is complete. If system does not operate properly, go to step 3 .
