Test 3: Engine Oil Pressure Gauge Inaccurate/Inoperative

NOTE: Prior to performing the following test, ensure engine oil level is correct and engine develops adequate oil pressure.
  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Verify system operation. If fault still exists, go to next step. If fault does not still exist, check for poor connections and intermittent conditions.
  3. If oil pressure gauge is pegged past 80 psi, go to step  6 . If oil pressure gauge is not pegged past 80 psi, go to next step.
  4. If oil pressure gauge stays at 0 psi, go to step  8 . If oil pressure gauge does not stay at 0 psi, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect oil pressure gauge sender connector. Connect a variable 100 ohm resistance between ground and Tan/White wire at oil pressure sender connector. Turn ignition on. Turn variable resistance (potentiometer) back and forth from maximum to minimum resistance. With variable resistance at zero ohms, oil pressure gauge should indicate 0 psi. With variable resistance at 88 ohms, oil pressure gauge should indicate maximum oil pressure. If oil pressure gauge operates as specified, go to step  12 . If oil pressure gauge does not operate as specified, go to step  13 .
  6. Disconnect oil pressure gauge sender connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Tan/White wire at oil pressure gauge sender connector. If voltage is not 7-10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 7-10 volts, go to step  12 .
  7. Using a voltmeter connected to ground, backprobe terminal B11 (Tan/White wire) at instrument cluster (component side). See Figure . If voltage is not 7-10 volts, go to step  13 . If voltage is 7-10 volts, go to step  11 .
  8. Ensure ignition is on. Disconnect oil pressure gauge sender connector. If oil pressure gauge is not pegged past 80 psi, go to next step. If oil pressure gauge is pegged past 80 psi, go to step  12 .
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector and remove connector comb. Using a test light connected to positive battery voltage, probe terminal B11 (Tan/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  13 .
  10. Repair short to ground in Tan/White wire between instrument cluster and oil pressure gauge sender. After repairs, go to step  14 .
  11. Repair open in Tan/White wire between instrument cluster and oil pressure gauge sender. After repairs, go to step  14 .
  12. Replace oil pressure gauge sender. After repairs, go to step  14 .
  13. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  14. Connect all disconnected components. Check system for proper operation. If system operates properly, test is complete. If system does not operate properly, go to step  3 .
