Test 2: Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate/Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Verify system operation. If fault still exists, go to next step. If fault does not still exist, check for poor connections and intermittent conditions.
  3. NOTE: There is a flat band that exists in temperature range of temperature gauge. With engine temperature at 190-220°F (88- 104°C), temperature gauge reading will stay at about 200°F (93°C).
  4. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) parameter in Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) data display. If temperature displayed on scan tool is not equal to actual engine coolant temperature, go to next step. If temperature displayed on scan tool is equal to actual engine coolant temperature, check for poor connections and intermittent conditions. Repair as necessary.
  5. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  6. Connect all disconnected components. Check system for proper operation. If system operates properly, test is complete. If system does not operate properly, go to step  3 .
