Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative

  1. If speedometer works properly, go to next step. If speedometer does not work properly, go to ALL GAUGES & INDICATORS (EXCEPT TURN SIGNALS, HIGH BEAM & SEAT BELT INDICATOR) INOPERATIVE  test.
  2. Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector. Connect Instrument Panel Tester (J-33431-C) between ECT sensor harness connector terminal "C" (Dark Green wire) and ground. Set instrument panel tester to 44 ohms. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If coolant temperature gauge reads about 260°F (125°C), go to next step. If coolant temperature gauge does not read about 260°F (125°C), go to step  7 .
  3. Set instrument panel tester to 1365 ohms. If coolant temperature gauge reads about 100°F (37°C), go to next step. If coolant temperature gauge does not read about 100°F (37°C), go to step  5 .
  4. Check for poor connection at ECT sensor connector. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If connection is okay, replace ECT sensor. Recheck system operation.
  5. Check for poor connection or short to voltage in circuit No. 135 (Dark Green wire) between ECT sensor, underhood accessory wiring junction block and instrument cluster connector C1, terminal "O". Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  6. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
  7. Check for poor connection, open or short to ground in circuit No. 135 (Dark Green wire) between ECT sensor, underhood accessory wiring junction block and instrument cluster connector C1, terminal "O". Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If circuit is okay, go to step  6 .
