Charge Warning Indicator Malfunctioning

  1. If vehicle has been checked for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), go to next step. If vehicle has not been checked for DTCs, go to appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. If speedometer works properly, go to next step. If speedometer does not work properly, go to ALL GAUGES & INDICATORS (EXCEPT TURN SIGNALS, HIGH BEAM & SEAT BELT INDICATOR) INOPERATIVE  .
  3. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Blue 80-pin connector C1. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charge warning indicator illuminates, go to next step. If charge warning indicator does not illuminate, go to step  5 .
  4. Check for short to ground in circuit No. 25 (Brown wire) between PCM connector C1, underhood accessory wiring junction block and instrument cluster Black 18-pin connector C2. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If circuit is okay, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
  5. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between PCM harness connector C1, terminal No. 36 (Brown wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charge warning indicator illuminates, locate and repair problem in charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If charge warning indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  6. Check for poor connection or open in circuit No. 25 (Brown wire) between PCM connector C1, underhood accessory wiring junction block and instrument cluster Black 18-pin connector C2. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  7. Check charge warning indicator bulb and bulb connection. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If bulb and bulb connection are okay, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
