Code 61 (PASS-Key(R) No. 1 Programming Resistance Out Of Range)
- Check for Code 52 or 53 before performing test. If either or both of these codes are set, correct problem and clear codes. Check if Code 61 resets. If Code 61 resets, go to next step.
- Connect DVOM to PASS-Key(R) ignition key resistor pellet contacts and measure resistance. If resistance is 394-12,036 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 394-12,036 ohms, replace key.
- Insert key into ignition lock cylinder. Disconnect ignition lock cylinder connector at base of steering column. Using Terminal Adapter Kit (J-35616), connect DVOM between terminal "B" (White/Black wire) of ignition lock cylinder connector (Central Control Module (CCM) harness side) and ground. See Figure . Note voltage reading.
- If voltage reading is 4.9-5.1 volts, go to step 5). If voltage reading is not 4.9-5.1 volts, use DVOM to backprobe between terminal E12 (White/Black wire) of CCM Green connector and ground. If voltage reading is still not 4.9-5.1 volts, check for poor connection at terminal E12 (White/Black wire) of CCM Green connector. If connection is okay, replace CCM. If voltage reading changes to 4.9-5.1 volts, repair open in White/Black wire.
- If voltage reading in step 4) is 4.9-5.1 volts, use terminal adapter kit to connect test light between terminal "A" (Purple/White wire) of ignition lock cylinder (CCM harness side) and battery voltage. If test light does not light, check for open in Purple/White wire or for poor connection at ignition lock cylinder connector. If Purple/White wire and connection are okay, replace CCM.
- If test light comes on, insert key into ignition lock cylinder. Using terminal adapter kit, connect DVOM between terminal "B" (White/Black wire) and terminal "A" (Purple/White wire) of ignition lock cylinder connector. If resistance is 394-12,036 ohms, check for possible intermittent. See PRELIMINARY CHECKS FOR CODES 51-54 .
- If resistance is not 394-12,036 ohms, remove hush panel under steering column. Disconnect Purple/White wire and White/Black wire of 2-pin PASS-Key(R) resistor connector leading into steering column. See Figure . DO NOT disconnect Yellow wires of 2-pin Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) connector.
- Connect Purple/White wire and White/Black wire of PASS-Key(R) resistor connector to mating connector pigtails of PASS-Key(R) Interrogator (J-35628-A). Insert key into steering column ignition lock cylinder. Turn PASS-Key(R) interrogator on. Key code reader will display key code number from 1 to 15 or "E" (error). Note this number and rotate key in ignition lock cylinder to ensure correct code number is displayed.
- If code is correct in all rotated positions, go to step 11). If code is not correct in all positions, replace key and go to step 8). If code is correct in all positions with replacement key, original key was defective.
- If code is not correct in all positions with replacement key, replace defective ignition lock cylinder. If "E" (error) appears on display, check keys by inserting them into key code reader ignition switch on PASS-Key(R) interrogator. If key code reader displays an "E", key is defective. If key code reader displays key code 1-15, replace defective ignition lock cylinder.
- Set key code selector on PASS-Key(R) interrogator to same key code number determined in step 8). Install key into ignition lock cylinder and start engine. If engine starts, key code number is correct.
- If problem was found in steps 7 through 11), repair as necessary. Clear codes and recheck if Code 61 resets. If Code 61 resets, replace CCM. When repairs are completed, clear codes and verify operation.
