Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Cooling System Draining and Filling (LSY GE 47716) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LSY Static Fill) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LGY Static Fill) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LGY GE 47716)

    Air Cleaner Assembly (1) - Remove - Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement

    Water Pump Inlet Pipe (3) - Remove - Water Pump Inlet Pipe Replacement

    Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe (2) - Remove - Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe Replacement (LGY) , or Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe Replacement (LSY Auxiliary Water Pump Inlet Pipe to Engine Coolant Air Bleed Hose) , or Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe Replacement (LSY Engine Block to Engine Coolant Flow Control Valve)

    Water Pump Pulley (2) - Remove - Water Pump Pulley Replacement

    Detach the retainers (1, 2) from the radiator inlet hose bracket.

  7. Camshaft Cover - Left Side - Remove - Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side 
  8. Camshaft Cover - Right Side - Remove - Camshaft Cover Replacement - Right Side 
  9. Remove the water outlet with the radiator hose and reposition aside. Water Outlet Replacement
  10. Crankshaft Balancer - Remove - Crankshaft Balancer Replacement 
  11. Oil Pump Flow Control Solenoid Valve Harness - Remove - Oil Pump Flow Control Solenoid Valve Harness Replacement 
  12. Camshaft Position Actuator Locating Pin Control Valve-Bank 1 - Remove - Camshaft Position Actuator Locating Pin Control Valve Replacement - Bank 1
  13. Camshaft Position Actuator Locating Pin Control Valve-Bank 2 - Remove - Camshaft Position Actuator Locating Pin Control Valve Replacement - Bank 2
  14. Remove the oil pan to engine front cover bolts. Upper Oil Pan Replacement (AWD) , or Upper Oil Pan Replacement (RWD)

    Engine Front Cover Bolt (1) - Remove

  16. Engine Front Cover Bolt (2) - Remove
  17. Engine Front Cover Bolt (3) - Remove [ 16x ]
  18. Engine Front Cover Bolt (4) - Remove [ 2x ]

    NOTE:

    The retaining clips attached to the oil pump flow control solenoid wire are used for production only and should be removed and discarded.

    Oil Pump Flow Control Solenoid Valve Electrical Connector (1) - Remove

    20. CAUTION:

    Do not pry against the face of the camshaft position actuators or the position actuator retaining bolts as the position actuators will be damaged.

    NOTE:

    Locate pry points to aid in loosening the cover.

  20. Remove the engine front cover (2) with the water pump.
  21. Engine Front Cover Locating Pin (3) - Remove [ 2x ]
  22. Clean, inspect and overhaul the engine front cover as needed. Engine Front Cover Overhaul 
    23. NOTE:

    Insert a piece of cardboard between the oil pan front and the oil pump in order to prevent any contaminants from falling into the oil pan.

  23. Use compressed air to remove any engine coolant from the engine cooling passages and from the top of the oil pan scraper (windage tray).
