- Guide the connecting rod away from the crankshaft connecting rod journal to lubricate the crankshaft connecting rod bearing journal.
- Apply a liberal amount of crankshaft prelube to the crankshaft connecting rod bearing journal. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Guide the connecting rod to the crankshaft connecting rod journal.
- Install the connecting rod end cap (4) on its original connecting rod (1) and ensure the bearing lock tangs are aligned on the same side of the rod.
- CAUTION:
Do not lubricate the NEW connecting rod bolts. The NEW bolts have a pre-applied graphite lubricant. Applying lubricant to the connecting rod bolts will effect the clamp load when the connecting rod bolts are torqued. Improper clamp load can lead to component failure and extensive engine damage.
CAUTION:This vehicle is equipped with torque-to-yield or single use fasteners. Install a NEW torque-to-yield or single use fastener when installing this component. Failure to replace the torque-to-yield or single use fastener could cause damage to the vehicle or component.
Install the NEW connecting rod bolts (5) into the connecting rod cap (4).
- Tighten the connecting rod bolts (5). Fastener Specifications
- During and after installation, ensure each piston is positioned properly in the correct cylinder. The locating arrow on the top of each piston must be pointing toward the front of the engine.
- Repeat these procedures for the remaining piston/connecting rod assemblies using the EN-48589 Crankshaft Rotation Socket to rotate the crankshaft.
- NOTE:
- Install and align the crankshaft rear oil seal housing within 10 minutes of applying the sealer.
- Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant
- DO NOT allow any engine oil on the area where the crankshaft rear oil seal housing is to be installed.
Apply a 3 mm (0.118 in) bead of RTV sealant around the perimeter of the NEW crankshaft rear oil seal housing (1). Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
Install the EN-51766 Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installation Tool (1) onto the rear of the crankshaft flange.

Install a 5/8 inch washer (2) onto the EN-38836 Pilot Bushing Installer/Clutch or equivalent. The washer serves as a stop against the crankshaft face and will assist in installing the bearing to the proper depth.
- Install the new pilot bearing (1) onto the tool.
Install a NEW pilot bearing (1) into the crankshaft using the EN-38836 Pilot Bushing Installer/Clutch or equivalent.
- Inspect the clutch pilot bearing for proper installation. A properly installed clutch pilot bearing will be installed until flush to the rear of the crankshaft.
{with Automatic Transmission}
- Install the automatic transmission flex plate (2).
- If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps:
- Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth.
- Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
- Remove loose debris from internal and external threads using compressed air.
- Apply liquid thread locking adhesive in a strip along half of the length of the external threads, starting at the tip, just prior to installation.
- Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
