Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Assemble the right cylinder head if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Assemble .
    2. Fig 1: Installing Cylinder Head Gasket

  2. Install the new right cylinder head gasket with OBEN/TOP imprint facing upward.
    3. IMPORTANT: Ensure all wires, components, etc. are out of the way when installing the cylinder head.
  3. Position the cylinder head to the engine block.

    NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
    NOTE: Refer to Torque to Yield Bolts Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  4. Install the new cylinder head bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  5. Following the tightening sequence use the J 36660-A  to rotate the cylinder head bolts as described in the following steps:

    Tighten: 

    1. Rotate the cylinder head bolts 90 degrees.
    2. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees.
    3. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees.
    4. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 15 degrees.

  6. Install the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right (LA3, LY9) in Engine Exhaust.

  7. Install the 2 bolts securing the rear timing belt cover to the right cylinder head.

    Tighten:  Tighten the rear timing belt cover bolts to 8 N.m (71 lb in).

  8. Install the timing belt tensioner. Refer to Timing Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  9. Install the right camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Right .
  10. Install the water crossover. Refer to Coolant Crossover Pipe Replacement (LA3, LY9) in Engine Cooling.
  11. Install the intake manifold flange. Refer to Intake Manifold Flange Replacement .
  12. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System (LA3, LY9) in Engine Cooling.
