Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Assemble the left cylinder head if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Assemble .
    2. Fig 1: Installing Left Cylinder Head Gasket

  2. Install the new left cylinder head gasket with OBEN/TOP imprint facing upward.
    3. IMPORTANT: Ensure all wires, components, etc. are out of the way when installing the cylinder head.
  3. Position the cylinder head to the engine block.

    NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
    NOTE: Refer to Torque to Yield Bolts Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  4. Install the new cylinder head bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  5. Following the tightening sequence use the J 36660-A  to rotate the cylinder head bolts as described in the following steps:

    Tighten: 

    1. Rotate the cylinder head bolts 90 degrees.
    2. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees.
    3. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees.
    4. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 15 degrees.

  6. Install the coolant outlet pipe. Refer to Coolant Pipe Replacement - Outlet in Engine Cooling.
  7. Install the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left (LA3, LY9) in Engine Exhaust.

  8. Install the 2 bolts securing the rear timing belt cover to the left cylinder head.

    Tighten:  Tighten the rear timing belt cover bolts to 8 N.m (71 lb in).

  9. Install the left camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Left .
  10. Connect the engine wiring harness from the engine rear lift bracket.
  11. Install the water crossover. Refer to Coolant Crossover Pipe Replacement (LA3, LY9) in Engine Cooling.
  12. Install the intake manifold flange. Refer to Intake Manifold Flange Replacement .
  13. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System (LA3, LY9) in Engine Cooling.
