Removal Procedure
NOTE:
The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.
CAUTION:
Refer to SIR CAUTION
in Cautions and Notices.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling ZONE 3 in SIR.
- Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
- Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the lock position and remove the key.
- Insert J 42640 into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column. This will maintain the correct orientation. See Special Tools and Equipment .
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING in General Information.
- Remove the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft bolt.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the steering column. Refer to STEERING COLUMN REPLACEMENT .
Important: Note the relationship of the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft and the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column in order to ensure proper instillation.
- Remove the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column retaining bolt.
- Remove the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column.
