Test T: Engine Oil Pressure Indicator Always On

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was not performed, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECKS.
  2. Turn ignition off and back on. This will activate Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) bulb check. Observe engine oil pressure indicator during the bulb check. If engine oil pressure indicator does not illuminate during bulb check and then turn off, go to next step. If engine oil pressure indicator illuminates during bulb check and then turns off, problem is intermittent, check wiring and connections.
  3. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. Start engine. Observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH parameter in PCM ENGINE DATA 3 LIST. If engine oil pressure switch parameter indicates low, go to next step. If engine oil pressure switch parameter does not indicate low, go to step  6.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect engine oil pressure sending unit. Turn ignition on. Observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH parameter in PCM ENGINE data list. If engine oil pressure switch parameter indicates low, go to next step. If engine oil pressure switch parameter does not indicate low, go to step  9.
  5. Check for short to ground in Tan/Black wire between PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 20 and engine oil pressure switch harness connector terminal "A". If no problem was found, go to step  7. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  11.
  6. Check for faulty connections at Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) harness connector. If no problem was found, go to step  8. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  11.
  7. Check for faulty connections at PCM harness connector. If no problem was found, go to step  10. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  11.
  8. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  11.
  9. Replace engine oil pressure sending unit. See OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After installation, go to step  11.
  10. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - DEVILLE article. After repairs, go to next step.
  11. After repairs, recheck operation of engine oil pressure indicator. If indicator operates properly, repair is complete. If indicator does not operate properly, return go to step  2.
