Test S: Engine Coolant Temperature Indicator Always On

  1. If cooling system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If cooling system diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to ENGINE COOLING DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECKS.
  2. Turn ignition off and back on. This will activate Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) bulb check. Observe engine coolant temperature indicator during the bulb check. If engine coolant temperature indicator illuminates during bulb check and then turns off, problem is intermittent, check wiring and connections. If engine coolant temperature indicator does not illuminate during bulb check and then turn off, go to next step.
  3. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. Observe engine coolant temperature parameter in POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) data list. If scan tool indicates coolant temperature is not within temperature range shown on temperature gauge, go to next step. If scan tool indicates coolant temperature is within temperature range shown on temperature gauge, See appropriate article for engine overheating diagnosis.
  4. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  5. After repairs, recheck operation of engine coolant temperature indicator. If indicator operates properly, repair is complete. If indicator does not operate properly, return to step  2.
