Test Q: Driver Information Center Switches Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was not performed, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECKS.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. Turn ignition on. Observe IGNITION 1 parameter in the IPC INPUT data list. If IGNITION 1 parameter is ON, go to next step. If IGNITION 1 parameter is not ON, go to step  12.
  3. Press and release each Driver Information Center (DIC) button. See Figure and Figure . Observe DISPLAY MODE SWITCH, DISPLAY TRIP RESET SW, ENGLISH/METRIC SW, INFO RESET SWITCH, INFORMATION DOWN SWITCH, INFORMATION UP SWITCH, ON/OFF SWITCH and TRIP ODOMETER A/B SWITCH parameter. If parameter for each switch is not ON when pressed and not OFF when released, go to next step. If parameter for each switch is ON when pressed and OFF when released, problem is intermittent, check wiring and connections.
  4. Observe scan tool DIC switch parameter. Left DIC switch contains DSPL MODE, ENG/MET, TRIP RESET and TRIP A/B buttons. If scan tool does not indicate OFF parameter for all buttons contained in left DIC switch, go to next step. If scan tool indicates OFF parameter for all buttons contained in left DIC switch, go to step  11.
  5. Observe scan tool DIC switch parameter. Right DIC switch contains ON/OFF, INFO RESET, INFO DOWN and INFO UP buttons. If scan tool does not indicate OFF parameter for all buttons contained in right DIC switch, go to next step. If scan tool indicates OFF parameter for all buttons contained in left or right DIC switch, go to step  11.
  6. If scan tool does not always display OFF parameter for suspect switch, go to next step. If scan tool always displays OFF parameter for suspect switch, go to step  8.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect DIC switch connectors. See DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER SWITCHES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Observe suspect DIC switch parameter on scan tool. If parameter is ON, go to step  9. If parameter is not ON, go to step  13.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect DIC switch connectors. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between ground and suspect DIC switch terminal. See Fig 1. See DRIVER INFORMATION SWITCH CIRCUITS  table. Turn ignition on. Observe suspect DIC switch parameter. If suspect DIC switch parameter is not ON, go to step  10. If suspect DIC switch parameter is ON, go to step  13.
  9. Check for short to ground in circuit for suspect switch. See DRIVER INFORMATION SWITCH CIRCUITS  table. If no problems are found, go to step  14. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  17.
  10. Check for open or high resistance in circuit for suspect switch. See DRIVER INFORMATION SWITCH CIRCUITS  table. If no problems are found, go to step  14. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  17.
  11. Check for open or high resistance in ground circuit of suspect switch. See DRIVER INFORMATION SWITCH CIRCUITS  table. If no problems are found, go to step  13. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  17.
  12. Check for open or short to voltage in Pink wire between IPC connector C2 terminal A3 and IGN 1 fuse (10-amp) located in rear fuse block. See Figure and Figure . If no problems are found, go to step  14. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  17.
  13. Check for poor connections at suspect DIC switch connector. If no problems are found, go to step  15. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  17.
  14. Check for poor connections at IPC connector. If no problems are found, go to step  16. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  17.
  15. Replace suspect DIC switch. See DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER SWITCHES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  17.
  16. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  17. After repairs, recheck operation of DIC switches. If switches operate properly, repair is complete. If switches do not operate properly, return to step  2.
