Test AP: Speedometer And/Or Odometer Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was not performed, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECKS.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. Start engine and test drive vehicle. Using scan tool, select POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DATA DISPLAY. Observe VEHICLE SPEED parameter. If VEHICLE SPEED parameter matches speedometer reading, go to next step. If VEHICLE SPEED parameter does not match speedometer reading, go to step  4.
  3. Check odometer operation. If odometer operates properly, problem is intermittent, check wiring and connections to IPC. If odometer does not operate properly, go to step  8.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 80-pin PCM harness connector C1 (Blue). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and PCM 80-pin harness connector C1 (Blue) terminal No. 26 (Dark Green/White wire). See Figure. If voltage is not more than 9.0 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 9.0 volts, go to step  6.
  5. Check for an open, short to ground or high resistance in Dark Green/White wire between PCM 80-pin harness connector C1 (Blue) terminal No. 26 and instrument panel cluster 16-pin harness connector C2 terminal A6. See Figure and Figure . If no problem was found, go to step  7. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  11.
  6. Check for short to battery voltage in Dark Green/White wire between PCM 80-pin harness connector C1 (Blue) terminal No. 26 and instrument panel cluster 16-pin harness connector A6. If no problem was found, go to step  9. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  11.
  7. Check for poor connections at Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) connector. If no problems are found, go to step  8. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  11.
  8. Check for poor connections at PCM connector. If no problems are found, go to step  10. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  11.
  9. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  11.
  10. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - DEVILLE article. After repairs, go to next step.
  11. After repairs, recheck operation of speedometer and odometer display. If speedometer and odometer display operates properly, repair is complete. If speedometer and odometer display does not operate properly, return to step  2.
