DTC P1617: No Response From Oil Level Switch: Testing

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was not performed, see INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECKS.
  2. Connect scan tool. See Figure. Turn ignition on. Observe ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH parameter in PCM ENGINE DATA 2 data list. If ENGINE OIL SWITCH parameter is not OK, go to next step. If ENGINE OIL SWITCH parameter is OK, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect oil level switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Observe ENGINE OIL SWITCH parameter in PCM ENGINE DATA 2 data list. If ENGINE OIL LEVEL parameter does not display LOW, go to next step. If ENGINE OIL LEVEL parameter displays LOW, go to step  6.
  4. Check for short to ground in Brown wire between oil level switch harness connector terminal "A" and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 80-pin harness connector C2 (Clear) terminal No. 23. See Figure and Figure. If no problem was found, go to next step. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  8.
  5. Check for faulty connections at PCM harness connector C2 (Clear). If no problem was found, go to step  7. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  8.
  6. Replace engine oil level switch. See OIL LEVEL SENDING UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  7. Replace PCM and reprogram. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - DEVILLE article. After replacement go to next step.
  8. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting DTC. If DTC does not reset, system is okay at this time. If DTC resets, return to step  2.
