Seat Belt Indicator/Chime Inoperative

  1. If seat belt diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If seat belt diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to SEAT BELT DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure . Turn ignition on. Select Inflatable Restraint Sensing And Diagnostic Module (SDM) data list. Monitor DRIVER SEAT BELT status. Unbuckle driver's seat belt. If DRIVER SEAT BELT status is UNBUCKLED, go to next step. If DRIVER SEAT BELT status is not UNBUCKLED, go to step  4 .
  3. Turn ignition off and back on. This will activate bulb check. Monitor seat belt indicator on Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) during bulb check. If seat belt indicator illuminates during the bulb check and then turns off, check for intermittent or poor connections at IPC. If seat belt indicator does not illuminate during the bulb check, go to step  9 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect driver seat belt switch connector located at base of seat belt buckle at floor. Turn ignition on. Monitor DRIVER SEAT BELT status. If DRIVER SEAT BELT status is not UNBUCKLED, go to next step. If DRIVER SEAT BELT status is UNBUCKLED, go to step  7 .
  5. Check for short to ground in Black/White wire between seat belt switch connector terminal "B" and SDM connector terminal A15. See Figure . If circuit is okay, go to next step. If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  11 .
  6. Check for poor connections at SDM connector. See Figure . If connections are okay, go to step  8 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  11 .
  7. Check for poor connections at driver seat belt switch. If connections are okay, go to step  10 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  11 .
  8. Replace SDM. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  9. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  10. Replace driver seat belt switch. See SEAT BELT SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  11. Recheck seat belt indicator operation. If seat belt indicator operates properly, repair is complete. If seat belt indicator does not operate properly, go to step  2 .
