Test No. 1: Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate/Inoperative

  1. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) Turn ignition on and select Powertrain Control Module (PCM) data display. Monitor ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) parameter. If ECT parameter matches gauge display, go to On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTIC article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If ECT does not match gauge display, go to next step.
  3. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using scan tool, obtain approximate mileage, and contact an authorized Delco service center for transfer of information from failed IPC to replacement IPC. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  4. Recheck coolant temperature gauge operation. If gauge does not operate properly, go to  2 . If gauge operates properly, repair is complete.
