Test No. 14: PRNDL Display Inaccurate/Inoperative

  1. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. If only center console mounted PRNDL display is inoperative, go to next step. If center console and instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) mounted PRNDL display is inoperative, go to step  6 .
  3. Check for open or short in Light Green wire between electronic PRNDL connector terminal No. 6 and IGN 0-BODY fuse (10-amp) located in rear compartment fuse block. See Figure . If circuit is okay, go to next step. If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  9 .
  4. Check for open in Black wire between electronic PRNDL connector terminal No. 8 and ground. If circuit is okay, go to next step. If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  9 .
  5. Check for open in signal circuit between electronic PRNDL and IPC. If circuits are okay, go to step  8 . If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  9 .
  6. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Select POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) data list. Monitor IMS parameter. Start engine and move shift lever to Park, Reverse, Drive and Neutral. If IMS parameter matches PRNDL display in all gears, go to On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If IMS parameter does not match PRNDL display in all gears, go to next step.
  7. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using scan tool, obtain approximate mileage, and contact an authorized Delco service center for transfer of information from failed IPC to replacement IPC. After repairs, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace electronic PRNDL. See ELECTRONIC PRNDL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  9. Recheck operation of PRNDL display. If PRNDL display operates properly, repair is complete. If PRNDL display does not operate properly, go to step  2 .
