Check Oil Level Message Inoperative

NOTE: Engine oil level is low, but CHECK OIL LEVEL message does not display.
  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check was not performed, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select Powertrain Control Module (PCM) data list. Monitor ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH status. If ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH status is OK, go to next step. If ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH status is not OK, go to step  9 .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the engine oil level switch. See Figure . Monitor ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH status. If ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH status is not LOW, go to next step. If ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH status is LOW, go to step  6 .
  4. Check for short to ground in Brown wire between oil level switch and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 23. If circuit is okay, go to next step. If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  10 .
  5. Check for poor connections at PCM connector. If connections are okay, go to step  7 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  10 .
  6. Check for poor connections at oil level switch connector. If connections are okay, go to step  8 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  10 .
  7. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repairs, go to step  10 .
  8. Replace engine oil level switch. After repairs, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  10. After repairs, ensure oil level is below add mark on dipstick. Recheck operation of CHECK OIL LEVEL message. If message operates properly, repair is complete. Fill oil to full mark on dipstick. If message does not operate properly, go to step  2 .
