Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering column.
    2. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Install the intermediate steering shaft upper pinch bolt at the steering column.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 48 N.m (35 lb ft).

  3. Install the intermediate steering shaft seal onto the steering column.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Connect the intermediate steering shaft (1) to the power steering gear stub shaft (2).
  6. Install the intermediate steering shaft lower pinch bolt at the power steering gear stub shaft.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 48 N.m (35 lb ft).

  7. Install the intermediate steering shaft seal onto the power steering gear.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Install the left sound insulator. Refer to Knee Bolster, Insulator, Molding Replacement - Instrument Panel in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  10. Remove the J 42640  from the steering column. See Special Tools .
