Manual Transmission: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 20 other vehicles, including the 2007 BMW Z4, 2006 BMW Z4, 2006 BMW 330Ci, 2006 BMW 325Ci, and 2005 BMW Z4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Pay attention to adapter sleeves (1,2), replace if necessary. See Fig 1 . Ensure correct position of cover plate.
  2. Remove release unit and release lever, clean and apply grease to relevant points.
  3. Check lubrication of transmission input shaft for sticky consistency. See Fig 2 . If grease is sticky, replace clutch plate. Check clutch plate for friction rust in taper splines and replace if necessary. Mechanically remove old grease and lining abrasion from taper splines of clutch plate (with a cloth). Then, to grease the taper splines, apply a thin, uniform layer of new grease with a brush to the entire area of the taper splines. Also in taper groove and on guide pin.
  4. CAUTION: Remove any butylene tape already fitted on center bearing. Clean adhesive area on center bearing and on body. Then coat adhesive area on body with mineral oil (to enable the sticky butylene tape to feed easily into the propeller shaft tunnel). This prevents any deformation of the butylene tape.
  5. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Replace self-locking nuts. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . During installation perform following:
    • Lubricate bearing pin (1). See Figure .
    • Lubricate shift rod pin (4). See Figure .
    • Large contact surface of shims (3) must rest on shift rod joint (2). Press center bearing (2) into transmission tunnel. See Fig 3 .
    • Detach masking tape from butylene tape on both sides. Attach butylene tape (1) to outside of center bearing (2). See Fig 4 .
    • Install reinforcement plate, see REINFORCEMENT PLATE  .
    • After completion of work, check transmission fluid level.
