Preparing the replacement transmission

Preliminary work 

• Refer to DISCONNECTING ALL BATTERY GROUND LEADS .
• Refer to REMOVING THE REAR DIFFUSER .
• Refer to REMOVING THE FRONT UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
• Refer to REMOVING THE STIFFENING PLATE .
• Removing the undershield on the left fuel tank.

  • Loosen screws (1).

  • Loosen screws (2).
  • Remove the undershield (1) at the fuel tank on the left.
• Refer to REMOVING UNDERSHIELD ON THE FUEL TANK ON THE RIGHT .
• Refer to REMOVING REINFORCEMENT STRUT .
• Removing rear tunnel connecting support.

  • Loosen screws (1).
  • Loosen screws (2).
  • Removing rear tunnel connecting support(3).
• Refer to REMOVING EXHAUST SYSTEM .
• Refer to REMOVING THE COVER OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AT THE REAR LEFT .
• Removing the cover of the rear right engine compartment.

  • Loosen the lock (1).
  • Remove the cover (2).

  Covering the vehicle battery 

  CAUTION: Unprotected battery terminals.

  Risk of short circuits! Risk of fire!

  • Cover the vehicle battery with the special tool 2 452 007  as shown.

  • Loosen screws (1).
  • Slide conduit (2) downwards.
• Refer to REMOVING THE WIRING HARNESS FROM THE CYLINDER BANK 2 .

• Refer to REMOVING CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEAR ENGINE UNDER CYLINDER BANK 1 .

• Refer to REMOVING THE HEAT SHIELDS .
• Refer to PARTIALLY LOOSENING THE PROP SHAFT .
• Refer to RELEASING THE FRONT PROP SHAFT ON THE FRONT AXLE TRANSMISSION .
• Refer to REMOVING AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (ALL-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE) (GA8HP75Z) .

• Replace clamps (arrows) of sound insulation on the right.

Parts:  Clamps

• Remount the sound insulation on the right.

• Disassemble transportation retainers.
• Remount all cable clips.
• Remount all seal plugs.
• Remount protective cap on output shaft.
• Remount transfer box.
• Make note of transmission identification (see applicable BMW Group parts catalogue and nameplate).

• Installing conduit on bank 2

  • Clip the wiring harness (2) into the clamps (1).

  • Position the wiring harness.
  • Tighten down screws (1).

  • Position the cover of the master DME control unit (1).
  • Engage the cover panel of the master DME control unit (1) downwards with the clamps (2) and the guide pins (3) in the carrier plate of the DME.
• Refer to INSTALLING THE CENTER COWL UPPER PART .
• Refer to INSTALLING TENSION STRUT ON SHOCK TOWER .
• Refer to INSTALLING WINDSHIELD PANEL COVER .
• Refer to INSTALLING LEFT AND RIGHT WIPER ARM .
• Installing the rear right engine compartment cover.

  Remove the battery cover  .

  NOTE: The following step(s) must be performed if the listed component(s) is/are installed.
  • Remove the special tool 2 452 007  from the battery.

  • Install the cover (2).
  • Lock the lock (1).
• Refer to INSTALLING THE COVER OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ON THE REAR LEFT .
• Refer to INSTALLING EXHAUST SYSTEM .

  • Position the connecting support (3) on the rear of the tunnel.
  • Tighten the screws (1).
    TIGHTENING TORQUES

  • Tighten screws (2).
    TIGHTENING TORQUES
    
    

    Undershield
    Hexagon screw	tightening torque	2.6Nm
