Fastening cylinder head bolts on timing case cover
- Secure the screws (1) to the timing case cover.

Turn the intake camshaft back by 180°
- Turn the intake camshaft (1) back with an opened spanner (2) by 180° against the direction of arrow.
Mounting the special tool on the processed surface of the camshaft
- Pay attention to the installation position:
For the camshaft (1) there are three machined surface. The special tool 2 249 117 can only be mounted in the marked position, (arrow).

Installing special tool for fixing camshafts on bank 1 (VANOS disassembled)
- Position the special tool 2 249 117 (1) on the camshafts of cylinder bank 1.
- Twist camshafts if necessary.
- Place the special tool 2 249 117 using two screws from cylinder head cover (2) so that it sets against the cylinder head.
- The installation position of the VANOS adjusters must be observed in every case.
IN is the intake adjuster (1) .
EX is the exhaust camshaft adjuster (2) .

Preloading the timing chain of cylinder bank 1
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.
- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Hand-tighten the bolts (1) .
- Pre-tension timing chain on special tool 2 249 162 at hexagon screw (2) with special tool 0 496 778 (00 9 460) to 0.6 Nm.

- Make straight marks on the VANOS central valves (1)
and the VANOS adjusters (2)
in the area of the hexagon head.
The angle must be 60°.
- Release the VANOS central valves (1)
in the area of the hexagon head in a counterclockwise direction until the upper mark of the VANOS central valve matches with the lower mark.
The rotational angle is 60°.
- Turn the engine counter-clockwise by 90° at central bolt.
Make sure that the special tools (1) 0 493 882 (11 9 190) and 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (2) do not collide with other components.
- Remove the special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (2)
.
- Position the special tool (1) 0 493 882 (11 9 190) in the recess on the engine block.
- Turn the engine on the central bolt clockwise until the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1) lies against special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (2) .
- Tighten special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (2) hand-tight to the vibration absorber with a screw of the belt pulley (3) .
- Remove the special tool (1) 0 493 882 (11 9 190) .
Checking the preload of the timing chain for cylinder bank 1
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.
- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Check whether the screws (1) have been hand-tightened.
- Check preload of timing chain on special tool 2 249 162 at hexagon screw (2) with special tool 0 496 778 (00 9 460) to 0.6 Nm.

- Installing conduit on bank 2.
- Clip the wiring harness (2) into the clamps (1).
- Refer to INSTALLING ENGINE VENTILATION LINE OF CYLINDER BANK 1 .
- Refer to INSTALLING THE TANK VENTILATION LINE OF CYLINDER BANK 1 PARTIALLY .
- Installing cable duct at cylinder bank 1.
- Position the conduit (2).
- Tighten the screws (1).
TIGHTENING TORQUESCable duct M6x16 screw Tightening torque 10Nm - Refer to INSTALLING THE ENGINE VENTILATION LINE OF CYLINDER BANK 2 .
- Refer to INSTALLING THE OXYGEN SENSOR MONITOR OF CYLINDER BANK 2 .

Remove the battery cover .
NOTE: The following step(s) must be performed if the listed component(s) is/are installed.- Remove the special tool 2 452 007 from the battery.
- Install the cover (2).
- Lock the lock (1).
