Removing and installing/replacing left spindle drive (automatic tailgate activation) (330i GT xDrive, 340i GT xDrive)
Special tools required:
- 00 9 325
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Determine and NOTE down opening height of automatic luggage compartment lid actuation
Adjust tailgate to maximum opening angle. The spindle drive may only be removed or installed when the tailgate is open to the maximum.
- Remove left (d-pillar) rear roof pillar TRIM PANEL
- Remove left rear window frame COVER
- Rattling when opening and closing
- Drive not functioning
- Drive is blocked or sluggish
- No longer closes or opens
Or if incorrect operation is suspected:
- Rear lid was closed with excessive exertion of force
- Bent, broken piston rod
- Broken ball head
The compression spring must be secured against unintentional sudden release .
Electric spindle drive for rear lid is under mechanical spring bias!
The component must be secured against falling down.
Attention !
Risk of damage to spindle drive!
If spindle drive has been electrically disabled (e.g. connector unplugged) the tailgate must only be moved slowly by hand.
Version with panorama glass roof:
- Remove rear left GRAB HANDLE .
Insert special tool 00 9 325 towards the rear of headlining as illustrated and position on reinforcement (1).
Slightly strike special tool 00 9 325 towards the bottom and thus release clip (2).
Installation note:
Replace faulty clip (2).
Press headlining (1) slightly towards the bottom and unclip cable clip (2).
Disconnect plug connection (3).
Danger of injury !
Support rear lid in fully opened position with suitable apparatus.
Disassemble BALL SOCKET (1) with clamp (2).
Feed out spindle drive (3) towards the bottom.
Concluding tasks:
Initialize automatic operation of tailgate using the service function in the diagnosis system using an appropriate scan tool.

Check the opening angle setting of the tailgate and restore the customer setting if necessary.
