Remove upper heat shield

Preliminary work 

• Refer to REMOVING THE COVER PANEL OF THE MASTER DME CONTROL UNIT .
• Refer to REMOVING THE COVER PANEL OF THE SLAVE DME CONTROL DEVICE .
• Refer to REMOVING THE ACOUSTIC COVER .
• Refer to REMOVING THE LAMBDA OXYGEN SENSOR FOR THE CYLINDERS 1 TO 4 .
• Refer to REMOVING LAMBDA OXYGEN SENSOR FOR THE CYLINDERS 5 TO 8 .
• Refer to REMOVING HOLDER OF DME CONTROL UNIT FOR CYLINDERS 5 TO 8 .
• Refer to REMOVING COOLANT EXPANSION TANK .
• Refer to REMOVING EXPANSION TANKS FOR THE CHARGE AIR COOLERS .
• Removing conduit from bank 1.

  • Loosen screws (1).
  • Slide conduit (2) downwards.
• Refer to REMOVING THE WIRING HARNESS FROM THE CYLINDER BANK 2 .

Remove upper heat shield 

• Loosen screw (1).
• Feed out the gasoline particulate sensor holder (2) with the sensor from the centering pin (3).

• Loosen screw (1).
• Feed out the gasoline particulate sensor holder (2) with the sensor from the centering pin (3).

• Release the wiring harness mounting (1) from wiring harness (2).

• Disengage the hose (1) and place to one side.

• Disengage the line (2) from the cable brackets.
• Loosen screws (1).

• Remove the holder for the expansion tank (1) upwards.

• Loosen screws (1).
• Place the holder for the pressure pipe (2) to the side.

• Unclip the pressure lines from the clamps in the areas (1) and (2).
• Remove the holder (3) to one side.

• Loosen the lock (1).
• Remove the cover (2).

  Covering the vehicle battery 

  WARNING: Unprotected battery terminals. 
  Risk of short circuits! Risk of fire! 

  • Cover the vehicle battery.
  NOTE: The following step(s) must be performed if the listed component(s) is/are installed.
• Cover the vehicle battery with the special tool  2 452 007  as shown.

• Remove the protective cap (1).
• Loosen nut (2).

• Detach the wiper arm (1) using special tool  0 493 441 (61 6 060)  .

• Release the cowl cover (1) from the detents (2) and (3).
• Detach the cowl cover (1) towards the top, starting from the side.

• Loosen screws (1) and (2).
• Remove tension strut (3) at the shock tower upwards.

• Version with mild hybrid technology: 

  Unclip wire (1) from the holders (arrows).

• Unscrew the bolts in the marked areas.
• Remove the center cowl upper part (1).

• Remove the heat shield (2) upwards.
