Install rear axle differential

NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Different variants may be installed depending on the vehicle equipment.

Installing the rear axle differential (without GHAS)

NOTE: Perform the steps on the right and left side.

Fold open the assembly protection ring (1).

Raise the rear axle differential (1) with the special tool 0 496 009 (33 5 200).
Insert the left output shaft (3) into rear axle differential (1).
Turn rear axle differential (1) to the right and insert the right output shaft (2) into rear axle differential (1).

NOTE: Perform the steps on the right and left side.
Pull on the lug (1) of the installation protection ring until one of the two predetermined breaking points breaks.
Pull out and dispose of the installation protection ring.

Lift the rear axle differential (1) using special tools 0 496 009 (33 5 200) and 0 490 133 (00 2 030) and position on the rear axle support.
Make sure that the special tool 0 496 080 (33 5 206) is not pinched between the rear axle differential and the dust plate.

Replace screws (1).
Parts: Screws

Screw in the screws (1) using hand force and tighten.

TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Rear differential to rear axle carrier, front
M12 Replace screw.	Joining torque	100 Nm
M12 Replace screw.	Angle of rotation	90°

Position the ground strap (2).

Tighten nut (1).

TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Ground strap on rear axle differential
M12	Tightening torque	15 Nm

Tighten down screw (1).

M10 Replace screw.	Joining torque	56 Nm
M10 Replace screw.	Angle of rotation	90°

Release and remove special tool 0 496 080 (33 5 206) from rear axle differential (1).
Lower and remove the special tools 0 490 133 (00 2 030) and 0 496 009 (33 5 200).

- Installing the rear axle differential (with regulated rear axle differential lock (GHAS))
NOTE: Perform the steps on the right and left side.
Fold open the assembly protection ring (1).

Raise the rear axle differential (1) with the special tool 0 496 009 (33 5 200).
Insert the left output shaft (3) in the rear axle differential (1).
Turn the rear axle differential (1) to the right and insert the right output shaft (2) in the rear axle differential (1).

NOTE: Perform the steps on the right and left side.
Pull at the tabs (1) of the installation protection ring, until one of the predetermined breaking points yields in.
Pull out and dispose of the installation protection ring.

Lift the rear axle differential (1) using special tools 0 496 009 (33 5 200) and 0 490133 (00 2 030) and position on the rear axle support.
Make sure that the special tool 0 496 080 (33 5 206) is not pinched between the rear axle differential and the dust plate.

Loosen and remove the special tool 0 496 080 (33 5 206) from the rear axle differential (1).
Lower the special tools 0 490 133 (00 2 030) and 0 496 009 (33 5 200) and set them aside.

Attach the cable on the holder (3).
Connect connectors (1) and (2) and lock.

Position the heat shield (2).

Tighten down screws (1).

TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

M5	Tightening torque	4.5 Nm
