Removing crankshaft
Preliminary work
- Remove ENGINE .
- Remove the right engine mount HOLDER .
- Install the ENGINE on the assembly jig.
- Remove the REMOVING THE OIL FILLER CAP
- Drain the MOTOR OIL
- Remove the alternator DRIVE BELT .
- Remove tank VENT VALVE .
- Remove INTAKE PLENUM .
- Remove IGNITION COILS .
- Remove the HIGH PRESSURE LINE between the high pressure pump and the rail.
- Remove HIGH-PRESSURE RAIL .
- Remove FUEL DELIVERY LINE .
- Remove HIGH PRESSURE PUMP .
- Remove both ACTUATORS (engine removed)
- Remove exhaust turbocharger AUXILIARY COOLANT PUMP .
- Remove the exhaust turbocharger (auxiliary coolant pump removed) COOLANT RETURN LINE .
- Remove the exhaust turbocharger (coolant return line removed) COOLANT FEED LINE .
- Remove front engine ENCAPSULATION .
- Remove the (engine removed) cylinder head COVER .
- Turn the ENGINE on the vibration damper.
- Block the CRANKSHAFT in the TDC firing position of the first cylinder (automatic transmission).
- Block the CAMSHAFTS .
- Remove the (engine removed) CHAIN TENSIONER .
- Release the VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Remove INTAKE ADJUSTER .
- Remove exhaust camshaft ADJUSTER .
- Disassemble the SPECIAL TOOL 2 358 122 .
- Remove the exhaust turbocharger OIL RETURN LINE .
- Remove the CYLINDER HEAD .
- Remove the VIBRATION DAMPER .
- Remove FLYWHEEL .
- Remove rear timing case COVER .
- Remove the oil VACUUM PUMP .
- Remove the OIL DEFLECTOR .
- Remove both TIMING CHAINS .
- Remove all PISTONS with connecting rod.
NOTE:
In the following work steps, the engine is rotated 180 degrees. The underside faces upwards.
- Remove both sealing caps (1) with a suitable tool (2).
- Rotate the crankshaft to the TDC of the first cylinder .
- Mount the special tool 2 288 054
and abut the bolts (1).NOTE: The description is for one component only. The procedure is identical for all further components.
- Make sure the special tool 2 288 054 is correctly fitted in the guides (1) of the counterbalance shafts (2).
- Slightly twist the crankshaft if necessary.
- Tighten special tool 2 288 054
.TIGHTEN TORQUES SPECIFICATION
Special tool 2 288 054 to crankshaft Tightening torque 20 Nm - Release screws (1) of the counterbalance shaft on the intake side.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Guide the special tool 2 288 054
out and remove.
- Guide the counterbalance shaft (1) on the intake side in the arrow direction
out of the crankshaft (2).
- Place the counterbalance shaft (1) on the intake side carefully
aside.
- Position a clean, lint-free cleaning cloth (1) between the counterbalance shaft (2) on the intake side and the crankcase (3).
- Ensure that the needle bearing (4) will not be damaged
.
- Unfasten nut (1).

Thread out the intermediate wheel (1) and remove.
- -Vehicles up to year of manufacture 07/16
Thread out the intermediate wheel (1) and remove.
- Observe the numbering (1) of the main bearing caps.
The installation position must be maintained.
- Loosen screws in the order (10) to (1).
- Place the main bearing cap neatly into the special tool 0 495 105 (11 4 480)
.CAUTION: Heavy component.
Heavy components can lead to injury or damage.- Remove and install heavy components with the aid of another person/other persons.
- Guide the crankshaft (1) out and remove.
