Removing the cylinder head
WARNING:
Working on 12 V electrical system.

- Make sure that there is no charger connected to the jump start terminal in the engine compartment.
- Detach battery ground lead from battery.
- For auxiliary batteries: Detach battery minus cables from all auxiliary batteries.

- When working on the fuel system, make sure the workstation has sufficient ventilation, e.g., by means of extraction.
- Tightly seal off open lines and connections; collect any leakage fuel directly at the point of exit.
- No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Preliminary work
- Disconnect all battery GROUND LEADS .
- Remove the front UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
- Remove the center UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
- Remove rear UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
- Remove front left or right bottom wheel arch COVER
- Drain the HIGH-TEMPERATURE COOLANT CIRCUIT COOLANT .
- Drain the LOW-TEMPERATURE COOLING SYSTEM COOLANT .
- Connect the radiator COOLANT LINE .
- Connect the auxiliary coolant pump COOLANT HOSE .
- Bring front compartment lid in the SERVICE POSITION .
- Remove the ACOUSTIC COVER .
- Remove the hood rear SEAL .
- Remove the rear left engine compartment COVER .
- Remove the rear right engine compartment COVER .
- Remove left and right WIPER ARM .
- Remove the cowl COVER .
- Remove the left and right shock tower TENSION STRUT .
- Remove the upper part FIREWALL .
- Remove rear ACOUSTIC COVER .
- Remove right sealing FRAME .
- Remove the bottom second FIREWALL .
- Remove intake silencer HOUSING .
- Remove RESONATOR .
- Remove clean AIR PIPE .
- Remove charge AIR LINE .
- Remove IGNITION COILS .
- Remove all SPARK PLUGS .
- Remove the cylinder head cover ACOUSTIC COVER .
- Remove the HIGH PRESSURE LINE between the high pressure pump and the rail.
- Remove FUEL DELIVERY LINE .
- Remove HIGH PRESSURE PUMP .
- Remove HIGH-PRESSURE RAIL .
- Remove the engine front ACOUSTIC COVER .
- Remove exhaust turbocharger auxiliary COOLANT PUMP .
- Remove front engine ENCAPSULATION .
- Remove both ACTUATORS .
- Remove the cylinder HEAD COVER .
- Remove the DME CONTROL UNIT .
- Remove the integrated POWER SUPPLY MODULE (PDM).
- Remove control unit BRACKET .
- Remove tank VENT VALVE .
- Remove INTAKE PLENUM .
- Remove the lambda OXYGEN SENSOR .
- Remove the oxygen SENSOR MONITOR .
- Remove left and right TANK COVER .
- Remove the tunnel connect SUPPORT .
- Remove EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Remove CATALYTIC CONVERTER .
- Remove STARTER MOTOR .
- Remove the exhaust turbocharger OIL RETURN LINE .
- Remove the exhaust turbocharger coolant FEED LINE .
- Remove the exhaust turbocharger coolant RETURN LINE .
- Remove the exhaust turbocharger OIL FEED LINE .
- Turn the engine on the VIBRATION DAMPER .
- Block the crankshaft in the TDC FIRING POSITION of the first cylinder (automatic transmission).
- Block the CAMSHAFTS .
- Remove chain TENSIONER .
- Release the VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Remove the exhaust side VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Remove exhaust camshaft ADJUSTER .
- Remove intake side VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Remove INTAKE ADJUSTER .
- DISASSEMBLE the special tool 2 358 122.
CAUTION:
On releasing high pressure line, fuel may emerge at high speed.

- Wear suitable personal protective equipment.
- Before performing any installation work, allow cooling system to cool down to less than 40°C.
- Note warnings on cylinder head cover.

- Detach battery terminal from battery pole. Do not pry off using a tool.

Engine damage due to missing motor oil.
Missing motor oil following replacement of the cylinder head or the engine can lead to damage on the valve train.

- After replacing the cylinder head or the engine, do not start the engine without observing the repair notes.
- It is imperative you observe the repair notes for cylinder head or engine replacement.

After replacing the motor or cylinder head: Reprogram or encode the digital motor electronics (DME) if necessary.
Read out the vehicle I-level and proceed accordingly.
Be absolutely certain to pay attention to PuMA measure 62634754.

NOTE:
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Collect and dispose of emerging fluids. Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.

- Unlock coolant line (1) and detach.
- Unlock and detach the connectors (1) and (2).
- Loosen the engine encapsulation (3) around the cylinder head.
- Unclip the cable (1) from the acoustic cover (2) in the highlighted area.NOTE: The figure shows the rear of the engine.
- Release screws (1) to (3).
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove the slide rail (2).
- Secure the intake camshaft with an open-end wrench (1).
- Unscrew the bolt (2) and remove the camshaft sensor wheel (3).
- Loosen screws (1).
- Use the special tool 0 495 747 (11 8 580)
for releasing the cylinder head bolts.
- Unscrew the cylinder head bolts in the sequence (10) to (1) in 360 degree steps.
- Remove the cylinder head (1) and the exhaust turbocharger with the workshop crane and the special tool 0 490 561 (11 0 000) .
