Replace electrical steering box (EPS)
In the event of moisture/corrosion inside the two plug connections, check the insulation of the connecting line. If the insulation reveals any noticeable/striking features, partial replacement will be necessary. Otherwise it will be sufficient to replace the contacts or connector housing.
Necessary preliminary work:
- Disconnect BATTERY NEGATIVE LEAD
.NOTE: High-current-carrying wiring laid with permanent positive connection (80 A fuse).
- Remove the FRONT WHEEL on the left and right.
- Remove STIFFENING PLATE .
- Remove the STEERING ASSEMBLY COVER .
Removal:
Rubber boot of track rod end must not be damaged!
Slacken nut (1).
- If necessary, hold up at the Torx socket.
Release the track rod end (2) from the swivel bearing.
Determine dimension (A) to simplify following adjustment of front axle.
Slacken bolt (1).
Unscrew track rod end.
- Counterhold track rod with open-end spanner if necessary.
Bring steering to center position.
Release clamping bolt (1).
Detach the steering shaft (2) from the steering gear.
Unlock plug connections (1) and disconnect.
Unfasten screws (2).
- Use the nuts as counter supports.
Remove the steering gear (3).
Installation:
Position the steering gear (3).
Part : Replace the screws (2) and nuts.
Tighten down screws (2).
Tightening torque 32 00 1AZ .
Connect and lock the plug connections (1).
Clean screw threads to remove all remnants of screw locking adhesive.
Slide the steering shaft (2) onto the steering gear.
Part : Replace clamping bolt (1).
Screw the clamping bolt (1) in and tighten.
Tightening torque 32 31 2AZ .
Screw the track rod end onto the track rod to dimension (A).
- Counterhold track rod with open-end spanner if necessary.
Tighten screw (1).
Tightening torque 32 21 2AZ .
Keep track rod end to swivel bearing connection clean and free from oil and grease.
Insert the track rod end (2) into the swivel bearing.
Part : Replace nut (1).
Tighten nut (1).
- If necessary, hold up at the Torx socket.
Tightening torque 32 21 3AZ .
Required follow-up work:
- Install the STEERING ASSEMBLY COVER .
- Install the STIFFENING PLATE .
- Install FRONT WHEELS .
- Connect BATTERY EARTH LEAD .
- Carry out PROGRAMMING/ENCODING .
- Teach in END STOP SOFTWARE .
- Perform wheel alignment. Refer to CARRY OUT KINEMATICS DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH VEHICLE LOAD UP TO DESIGN POSITION or KINEMATICS DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH RIDE HEIGHT MEASUREMENT WITHOUT LOADING THE VEHICLE .
