Replacing gaiter for steering gear on left or right
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove STIFFENING PLATE .
- Remove left or right STEERING ASSEMBLIES COVER .
Removal:
Slacken nut (1).
- If necessary, counter-hold at the Torx socket.
Release the track rod end (2) from the swivel bearing.
Determine dimension (A) to simplify following adjustment of front axle.
Slacken bolt (1).
Unscrew track rod end.
- Counterhold track rod with open-end spanner if necessary.
Before removal, clean the track rod, gaiter and the area around the gaiter in order to prevent the ingress of dirt!
Undo clamp (1) and clamp (2).
Detach gaiter from track rod.
Installation:
Grease the track rod at the seat of the gaiter (1) with "FB-1 lubricating grease, part number 2 208 093".
- This ensures that the gaiter is not rotated when the track rod is rotated.
Before installing the gaiter, lightly grease the steering gear at the seat of the gaiter with FB-1 lubricating grease, part number 2 208 093.
Pull the gaiter onto the track rod.
Mount clamp with EAR HOSE CLAMP (1) and clamp (2).
Screw in track rod end to dimension (A).
Tighten clamping bolt (1).
Tightening torque 32 21 2AZ .
Keep track rod end to swivel bearing connection clean and free from oil and grease.
Insert the track rod end (2) into the swivel bearing.
Part : Replace nut (1).
Tighten nut (1).
- If necessary, counter-hold at the Torx socket.
Tightening torque 32 21 3AZ .
Required follow-up work:
- Install left or right STEERING ASSEMBLY COVER .
- Install STIFFENING PLATE .
- Carry out wheel alignment procedure. Refer to CARRY OUT KINEMATICS DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH VEHICLE LOAD UP TO DESIGN POSITION or KINEMATICS DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH RIDE HEIGHT MEASUREMENT WITHOUT LOADING THE VEHICLE .
