Replacing rear silencer (S55 engine)
Only perform this repair work after engine has cooled down.
Danger of injury!
Call on the assistance of a second person to remove the rear silencer.
Necessary preliminary work:
- Support rear silencer with a suitable jack and secure against falling down.
Removal:
Carry over separation point to faulty rear silencer and mark.
Secure rear silencer against falling off.
Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.
Loosen screw (1).
Remove nut (2) from rear axle support at rear right.
Remove nut (1) from rear axle support at rear left.
Unlock and detach connector (1) from controller drive for left exhaust flap.
Slacken nut (2).
Unlock and detach connector (1) from controller drive for right exhaust flap.
Slacken nut (2).
Lower the rear silencer with the assistance of another person and remove it.
Preparation for installation:
Check rubber mount for damage, replace if necessary.
Installation:
Install rear silencer (1) with aid of second person.
Tighten nut (2).
Tightening torque 18 20 3AZ .
Connect and lock connector (1) for controller drive for right exhaust flap.
Connector (1) must engage audibly.
Tighten nut (2).
Tightening torque 18 20 3AZ .
Connect and lock connector (1) for controller drive for left exhaust flap.
Connector (1) must engage audibly.
Tighten nut (1) on rear axle support at rear left.
Tightening torque 18 20 4AZ .
Tighten nut (2) on rear axle support at rear right.
Tightening torque 18 20 4AZ .
Tighten screw (1).
Adjust new rear silencer and connect by clamp to center silencer.
Center clamp and tighten down.
Tightening torque 18 31 35AZ .
Schematic diagram is for example purposes. Some parts may differ in certain details.
Replace the exhaust covers (1).
Parts: Exhaust cover
Correctly position and align the exhaust covers (1) on the exhaust system.
With increased effort, slide the exhaust covers (1) onto the exhaust system up to the limit position.
Required follow-up work:
- Check exhaust system for leaks.
