Removing and installing/replacing drive for loading aid on left or right (M4 Convertible)

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Connect BATTERY CHARGER .
• Remove COVER PANEL FOR SUPPORT TUBE .
• Remove TRIM PANEL FOR REAR OF LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT .

Move soft top into position shown.

Removal: 

Use emergency release to open tailgate.

Release screw (1).

Detach the locking plate (1) from the holder (2) and the shaft (3).

Thread a suitable screw (1), for instance, M4x40 into the shaft (2).

Use pliers (3) to pull out the shaft (2).

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Release screw (2).

Maneuver out drive motor (3).

Installation: 

Ensure that the rubber ring (1) seats correctly at the main bearing.

Insert the drive (2) in the rubber ring (1).

Insert the drive (3) and retain it in position with the screw (2).

Do not yet tighten the screw (2).

Connect the connector (1).

Make sure that the microswitch (1) is not operated.

The linkage (2) must push on the lever (3).

If necessary, twist the linkage (2) until the lever (3) is operated.

Close soft top completely.

Open tailgate.

Insert the bolt (1).

If necessary, adjust the linkage (3) manually until the Torx sockets of the drive (2) and the linkage (3) are in alignment.

Screw down the drive (2) tightly.

Tightening torque 54 37 29AZ .

Insert the locking plate (1) in the holder (2) and shaft (3).

Slide the anti-twist lock (2) as far as possible to the inside.

Carefully position the screw (1) and tighten it, continuing until it is just possible to move the locking plate.

The soft top must be closed completely.

Perform "CTM loading aid: joint switchover following repair" service function.

• Service functions
• 03 Body
• Locking and security functions
• Retractable hardtop

Open the soft top completely.

This process will automatically center the locking plate.

Tighten screw (1).

Tightening torque 54 37 30AZ .

Required follow-up work: 

• Install COVER PANEL FOR SUPPORT TUBE .
• Install TRIM PANEL FOR REAR OF LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT .
