Replacing the rear axle differential ventilation line (AWD) (X2 xDrive 28i 2018-2023, X2 M35i 2019-2022)

Necessary preliminary work:

Refer to REMOVING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM .
Refer to REMOVING THE RIGHT TANK COVER .
Remove heat shields. Refer to REMOVING FRONT HEAT SHIELD , and REMOVING HEAT SHIELD AT REAR , and REMOVING HEAT SHIELD AT UPPER EXHAUST TURBOCHARGER .

Removal:

In order to protect the propeller shaft, install special tool 2 407 851 between the front and rear propeller shaft.

CAUTION: The arrows on special tool 2 407 851 must point to the front in the direction of travel during the installation.

Unfasten screws (1).

Tie the propeller shaft must be tied away without fail or supported with a suitable tool.

Unfasten screws (1).

Remove cover (2).

Disconnect connector (1).

Loosen cable (2) from control unit holder.

Support the rear axle differential (1) with the universal jack and special tool 23 4 150.

Secure rear axle differential (1) with tensioning belt (2) on special tool 23 4 150.

Release screw (1) of rear axle differential.

Undo screws (1) on left and right of cross member (2) (right side identical).

Lower rear axle differential (1) by a maximum of 10 cm.

Release ventilation line (1) from holder (2).

Release ventilation line (1) out of rear axle differential (3) and remove.

Installation note:

Risk of damage:

So as not to damage the O-ring of the ventilation line during installation, apply a light coating of BMW HOK oil to the O-ring prior to installation.

Position ventilation line (1) on rear axle differential (3) and secure.

Secure ventilation line (1) on holder (2).

Raise rear axle differential (1).

Tighten screw (1) of rear axle differential by hand.

Tighten screws (1) on left and right of cross member (2) (right side identical).

Tightening torque 33 31 3AZ .

Tighten screw (1).

Remove tensioning strap (2).

Lower universal jack using special tool 23 4 150 and put away.

Secure cable (2) on control unit holder.

Connect connector (1) to control unit.

Position cover (2).

Tighten down screws (1).

Tightening torque 33 31 8AZ .

Required follow-up work:

Install heat shields. Refer to INSTALLING FRONT HEAT SHIELD , and INSTALLING THE REAR HEAT SHIELD , and INSTALLING THE HEAT SHIELD ON THE EXHAUST TURBOCHARGER, TOP .
Refer to INSTALLING RIGHT TANK COVER .
Refer to COMPLETELY INSTALLING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM .
