Replacing left or right tie rod (X2 2018-2023)

Special tools required: 

CAUTION: If the surface of the rack is damaged (e.g. due to corrosion), the steering gear must be replaced!

Necessary preliminary work: 

Removal: 

Slacken nut (1).

Release tie rod (2) from swivel bearing.

Slacken clamping bolt (1) and screw off tie rod end.

Before removal, clean the tie rod, gaiter and the area around the gaiter in order to prevent the ingress of dirt!

Release EAR CLIP  (1).

Pull off the gaiter (2) from the steering gear.

Loosen the clip (1).

Detach gaiter (2) from tie rod.

CAUTION: To avoid damage to the rack and to the suspension mounting, move out the rack only as far as necessary!

Release the tie rod (axial joint) from the rack of the steering gear by means of special tool 2 287 009.

Installation: 

Unscrew the tie rod end from the new tie rod.

Screw the tie rod (axial joint) onto the rack.

Tighten the tie rod (axial joint) by means of special tool 2 287 009.

Tightening torque 32 21 3AZ .

Grease tie rod at the fit of the gaiter (1) with grease "FB-1 part number 2 208 093".

Before installing the gaiter, lightly grease the steering gear at the seat of the gaiter with FB-1 lubricating grease.

Mount the gaiter (2) to the steering gear.

Part:  Replace the ear clamp (1).

Secure the EAR CLAMP  (1).

Position the gaiter (2) on the tie rod.

Secure the clip (1).

Screw the tie rod end onto the tie rod until dimension (A) is reached.

Insert tie rod (2) into the swivel bearing.

Part:  Replace nut (1).

Tighten nut (1).

Tightening torque 32 21 1AZ .

Tighten clamping bolt (1).

Tightening torque 32 21 2AZ .
