Installing the right cylinder head
Screw connection of the cylinder head
Handle the timing chain carefully to protect the timing chain and timing chain drive from damage.
- Position the cylinder head over the engine block with the special tool 0 490 567 (11 0 020)
and a workshop crane.NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Conduct the following operation with the assistance of a second person.NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Perform this step carefully to prevent paint damage on the engine mount. - Thread in timing chain (1) and maintain tension.NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage to guide rails.
The application of great force can damage the guide rails of the timing chain.- When removing and installing the cylinder head, make sure that the cylinder head does not damage the guide rail.
- Slowly lower the cylinder head (1).
- Feed in the guide rails of the timing chain.
- Position cylinder head (1) on the engine block.
- The cylinder head (1) must sit on the fitting sleeves.
- Remove the special tool 0 490 567 (11 0 020) from the securing eye (1) and the special tool 0 493 987 (11 8 260).
- Remove the special tool 0 493 987 (11 8 260)
from the cylinder head.
- Replace cylinder head bolts (1) to (14).
Parts: screws.
- Screw all the cylinder head bolts (1) to (14) with washers into the cleaned cylinder bores.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence (1) to (14) with the snug torque.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

- Install oil return line.

Coolant feed line to turbocharger M6x10 Tightening torque 8 Nm - Attach and lock connector (1) of the blow-off valve.
- Lock must snap audibly into place.
- Attach and lock connector (1) of the wastegate valve controller.
- Lock must snap audibly into place.
- Replace sealing rings.

Guide tube for oil dipstick to cylinder head M6x14 Tightening torque 12 Nm - Secure the cable bracket (1) to the guide tube for the oil dipstick.
- Connect the coolant hoses.
- Fasten coolant hoses with the spring band clamps (1).
- Install bearing bolt (1).
- Tighten bearing bolt (1).TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Bearing screw of guide rail to crankcase 1 to 6 M7 Tightening torque 13 Nm - Tighten down screw (1).

Installing the coolant thermostat
- Replace the seal (1).
- Parts: Gasket
- The coolant thermostat (3) must fit firmly in the holders (2).
- Position coolant thermostat.
- Tighten the screws (1).TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Thermostat housing to coolant pump M6 Tightening torque 10 Nm - Tighten down screw (1).TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Thermostat housing to coolant pump M6 10 Nm - Attach and lock the connector (1).
- Connect and lock the coolant hose (2).
- Secure positive battery cable (1) to the holders (2).
- Connect the connector (1) to the wiring harness section for the sensor system of cylinders 7 to 12 and lock audibly.
- Secure the vehicle wiring harness with the clamps (arrows).

- Tilt the cylinder head (2) in arrow direction arrow and slowly lower the workshop crane.
- Feed in the guide rails of the timing chain.
- Position cylinder head (2) on the engine block.
- The cylinder head (2) must sit on the fitting sleeves.
- Release the special tool 0 490 567 (11 0 020) from special tools 0 493 997 (11 8 350) and 0 493 987 (11 8 260) on the cylinder head.
- Replace cylinder head bolts (1) to (14).
Parts: screws.
- Screw in all cylinder head bolts (1) to (14) with washers in the cleaned cylinder bores.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence (1) to (14) with snug torque.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

- Remove special tool 0 493 987 (11 8 260)
from front cylinder head.
- Position ground cable.
- Tighten down screw (1).TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Ground cable to engine block M6 Tightening torque 8 Nm - Connect coolant return line and secure with spring strap clamp (2).
- Replace O-ring (1).
Parts: O-rings
- Position the coolant feed line at the turbocharger.
- Tighten down screw (1).TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Coolant feed line to turbocharger M6x10 Tightening torque 8 Nm - Replace sealing rings on oil return line (1).
Parts: Sealing ring
- Install the oil return line (1) in the turbocharger.
- Tighten oil return line screw on the turbocharger from below with a long extension.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Oil return line at the turbocharger M6x10 Tightening torque 8 Nm - Attach and lock connector (1) of the blow-off valve.
- Lock must snap audibly into place.
- Attach and lock connector (1) of the wastegate valve controller.
- Lock must snap audibly into place.
- Install heat shield (1) and position on the engine support bracket.
- Tighten screws of the heat shield (1) on the engine support bracket.TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Heat shield to engine support arm M6 Tightening torque 10 Nm - Position heat shield.
- Tighten down screws (2).TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Heat shield of exhaust manifold to cylinder head M8x16 Tightening torque 8 Nm - Tighten down screws (1).TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Heat shield to heat shield of exhaust manifold M6x12 Tightening torque 8 Nm - Connect the coolant hoses.
- Fasten coolant hoses with the spring band clamps (1).
- Install the bearing screw (1) in the guide rail.
- Tighten bearing bolt (1).TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Bearing screw of guide rail to cylinder head 7 to 12 M14 Tightening torque 25 Nm NOTE: Description is for right component only. The procedure on the left side is identical. - Secure the positive battery cable (1) in the holders (2).
- Fasten the cable in the rear bracket on the cylinder head.
- Install the transmission wiring harness (1) and fasten it with the clamps (arrows).
Installing intake adjuster of cylinders 1 to 6
- If applicable, replace the intake adjuster.
Parts: Intake adjuster
- Position the intake adjuster (1) with the timing chain on the intake camshaft.
The intake cam phaser is marked with "EIN" .
The intake cam phaser (1) can be positioned freely on the camshaft.
Installing exhaust camshaft adjuster of cylinders 1 to 6
- Replace exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) if necessary.
Parts: Exhaust camshaft adjuster
- Position the exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) with the timing chain on the exhaust camshaft.
The exhaust cam phaser is marked with "Off" .
The exhaust cam phaser (1) can be positioned freely on the camshaft.
Replace the central bolt
- Coat the new central bolt of the VANOS adjuster (1) with copper paste.
- Install the new screws (1).

Secure both central bolts of the VANOS gear
- Apply the central bolts (1) of the exhaust and intake adjuster hand-tight.
Install the upper slide rail
- Install the slide rail (3).
- Tighten down screws (1) and (2).

Installing the exhaust camshaft adjuster of cylinders 7 to 12
- Replace exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) if necessary.
Parts: Exhaust camshaft adjuster
- Position the exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) with the timing chain on the intake camshaft.
The exhaust cam phaser is marked "Ex" .
The exhaust cam phaser (1) can be positioned on the camshaft at random.
Installing intake adjuster of cylinders 7 to 12
- If applicable, replace the intake adjuster (1).
Parts: Intake adjuster
- Position the intake adjuster (1) with the timing chain on the intake camshaft.
The intake cam phaser is marked with "EIN" .
The intake cam phaser (1) can be positioned freely on the camshaft.
Replace the central bolt
- Coat the new central bolt of the VANOS adjuster (1) with copper paste.
- Install the new screws (1).

- Apply the central bolts (1) of the exhaust and intake adjuster hand-tight.
Install the upper slide rail
- Install the slide rail (3).

Installing special tool for fastening camshafts
Damage of the engine and installed parts.
Non-compliance with the instructions for mounting and disassembly may lead to damage to the engine and installed parts.
- Comply with the regulations for the installation and disassembly.
- Perform work with vehicle care.
- Incorrect assembly of the special tool is possible.
- Make sure that labeling (A or E) (1) in the center of the camshafts is legible.
- Place the special tools 0 496 381 (11 9 893) out of the set of special tools 0 496 359 (11 9 890) flush onto the surface on the cylinder head.
- Determine the air gap with a feeler gauge.
The value measured for the air gap on the intake camshaft and the exhaust camshaft must not be more than 0.4 mm.
Screw in special tools 11 9 895 1 to 6 and 7 to 12
- Screw the special tools 0 496 359 (11 9 890) into the cylinder head at 10 Nm.
Fastening the camshafts with the special tool
- Position the special tool 0 496 380 (11 9 892) on the special tool (gauges) 0 496 381 (11 9 893) .
- Apply the special tool 0 496 379 (11 9 891) hand-tight.
The gauges 0 496 381 (11 9 893) must rest flush on the cylinder head.
Installing special tool to pre-tension timing chain
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.
- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Screw special tool 0 496 360 (11 9 900) in on the cylinder head by hand.
- Pretension timing chain with special tool 0 496 360 (11 9 900) to 0.6 Nm.
Securing the central bolt of the variable camshaft timing control of the intake
- Tighten central bolt (1) on the intake adjuster with an electronic torque/torsion angle wrench (2).

Securing the central bolt of the variable camshaft timing control intake (cylinders 1 to 6)
- Tighten central bolt (1) on the intake adjuster with an electronic torque/torsion angle wrench (2).
