11 36 127 Removing and installing/replacing both VANOS central valves (B48B)

Special tools required: 

• 2 358 122 
• 0 496 855 
• 2 450 487
• 11 6 480 

Necessary preliminary work: 

• Check TIMING 
• Remove CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Attention! 

When replacing one or more VANOS central valves: 

When removing, pay attention to  or note the identification/part number of the VANOS central valve.

A VANOS central valve must always be replaced with the same part number  .

A combination of different VANOS central valves is not  permitted!

PuMA measure 64122020  must be observed.

Release VANOS central valve (1) only with installed special tool 2 358 122  .

To remove the central valve (1), use the changeover ratchet (2) from special tool 0 496 855  with special tool 2 450 487.

Release VANOS central valve of the exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) with special tool 0 496 855  .

Remove the VANOS central valve (1) of the intake side.

Installation: 

Mount the VANOS central valve (1) of the intake side and fully bring it into contact with the surface.

Mount and abut the exhaust side VANOS central valve (1).

Install new chain tensioner.

Parts:  Chain tensioner

Tighten chain tensioner (1).

Tightening torque 11 31 1AZ .

Tighten VANOS central valve of the intake adjuster (1) with special tool 0 496 855  .

Tightening torque 11 36 1AZ .

Tighten VANOS central valve of the exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) with special tool 0 496 855  .

Tightening torque 11 36 1AZ .

Remove all special tools.

Crank engine with special tool 11 6 480  twice in direction of engine rotation.

Attention! 

Do not crank engine backwards  .

Required reworking: 

• Check TIMING 
• Install CATALYTIC CONVERTER

When replacing one or more VANOS central valves, the I-level must be encoded and programmed if necessary. 

• Connect diagnosis system and follow diagnosis instructions 
• Service functions
• Power train
• Engine electronics
• Reset VANOS adaptation values
• Encode and program I-level if necessary
