Special tools required: 

• 2 358 122 
• 0 496 855 
• 2 450 487
• 11 6 480 

Necessary preliminary work: 

• Remove CATALYTIC CONVERTER
• Check TIMING 

Attention! 

When replacing the exhaust camshaft adjuster: 

When removing, pay attention  to or note the identification/part number of the exhaust camshaft adjuster.

An exhaust camshaft adjuster must always be replaced with the same part number  .

A combination of different exhaust camshaft adjusters is not  permitted!

PuMA measure 64122020  must be observed.

Attention! 

Release VANOS central valve (1) only with installed special tool 2 358 122  .

For correct fitting see repair instructions: CHECK TIMINGS .

To remove the central valve (1), use the changeover ratchet (2) from special tool 0 496 855  with special tool 2 450 487.

Release VANOS central valve of the intake adjuster (1) with special tool 0 496 855  .

Remove VANOS central valve (1) of exhaust side.

Remove exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) from exhaust camshaft.

Slightly tilt exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) and remove downwards.

Installation: 

Attention! 

Risk of mixing up the intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters.

Danger of engine damage! 

Intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters are different.

For the exhaust camshaft the exhaust camshaft adjuster is marked with EX  .

The intake adjuster for the intake camshaft is marked with IN  .

Feed exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) into timing chain (2) and position on exhaust camshaft (3).

Abut VANOS central valve (1) of exhaust side.

Install new chain tensioner.

Parts:  Chain tensioner

Tighten chain tensioner (1).

Tightening torque 11 31 1AZ .

Tighten VANOS central valve of the intake adjuster (1) with special tool 0 496 855  .

Tightening torque 11 36 1AZ .

Tighten VANOS central valve of the exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) with special tool 0 496 855  .

Tightening torque 11 36 1AZ .

Remove all special tools.

Crank engine with special tool 11 6 480  twice in direction of engine rotation.

Attention! 

Do not crank engine backwards  .

Required reworking: 

• Check TIMING 
• Install CATALYTIC CONVERTER

When replacing the exhaust camshaft adjusters, the I-level must be encoded and programmed if necessary. 

• Connect diagnosis system and follow diagnosis instructions 
• Service functions
• Power train
• Engine electronics
• Reset VANOS adaptation values
• Encode and program I-level if necessary
