Removing and installing/replacing rear window (X6 M)
Attention!
The following notes form the basis for these repair instructions and must be adhered to at all times:
- TOUCHING UP PAINTWORK DAMAGE .
- NOTES on window bonding..
- GENERAL PROCEDURE for dismantling/installation of affixed window glass
When reusing the rear window:
Avoid damaging lines for heated rear window/- aerial.
The following new parts/CONSUMABLES are required (sourcing reference BMW Parts Department).

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove ADDITIONAL BRAKE LIGHT .
- Remove TAILGATE TRIM PANEL .
Release screws (1).
Disconnect plug connections (2) and secure cable to rear window with adhesive tape.
Attention!
Risk of damage!
Tape off body in area of piercing point with fabric adhesive tape.
Slide string out of SPIDER at line (1) through the adhesive bead.
Cut out rear window.
Fitting spacer buffers:
Attention!
Spacer buffers are installed to avoid rear window breakage.
Completely remove the damaged spacer buffers (1).
Bond new spacer buffers (1) to the marks on the tailgate.
Overview of rear window bonding:
| a [mm] = Position adhesive bead | centrally to tolerance band |
| b [mm] = Width adhesive bead | 7 ±1 |
| h [mm] = Height adhesive bead | 12 ±1 |
Apply bead joint in area (A).
A tolerance band is printed on the ceramic (two dashed lines) that marks the position of the adhesive bead. Place the adhesive bead centrally on the tolerance band.
Aerial structure of rear window must not come into contact with adhesive.
Installation note:
Carefully working on rear window with SIPHON :
- install at top
- Align sides evenly
- align top in area (X and Y) according to dimension (A and B)
- Engage rear window in Dual Lock tapes
- secure in this position with yellow plastic adhesive tapes
